Lake Wakatipu comes from the original Māori name Whakatipu wai-māori. [1] With a length of 80 kilometres (50 mi), it is New Zealand's longest lake, and, at 289 km 2 (112 sq mi), its third largest. The lake is also very deep, its floor being below sea level (−110 metres), with a maximum depth of 420 metres (1,380 ft).

Wakatipu is the name of a district in inland Otago, New Zealand. The best known geographical feature with that name is Lake Wakatipu . The Wakatipu Basin is a flat area to the North East of Lake Wakatipu surrounded by mountains.
The river was first known by its Māori name of Te Awa Whakatipu, with te awa literally translating as 'the river'. [7] The name Whakatipu is shared with several nearby geographic features, including Lake Wakatipu [a] and Whakatipu Kā Tuka (the Hollyford River) though this name is an archaic term and its original meaning is no longer known.
