The scheme was originally built between 1924 and 1943 by the British Aluminium Company. This company was bought by Canadian-based Alcan in 1982 which was subsequently bought by Rio Tinto in 2008. Rio Tinto Alcan then sold the scheme to GFG Alliance in November 2016. [1] The hydroelectric scheme and aluminium smelter are still in operation.
The power house and aluminium smelting plant were situated in Kinlochleven, which is adjacent to the sea loch Loch Leven. The power station now produces electricity for the aluminium smelter in Fort William, supplementing the supply from the Lochaber hydroelectric scheme. Surplus energy is sold to the national grid for public supply.
The Blackwater Reservoir was formed by constructing a mass concrete gravity dam over ½ mile (800 m) across the Blackwater, the main tributary of the River Leven, with a catchment area of 60 square miles (160 km 2). Water is conveyed along a covered concrete conduit 3.5 miles (5.6 km) long, which also collects water from three side stream intakes.
The principal location on the railway was the factory area (or 'Base Camp' prior to its opening), where there were various facilities such as a locomotive and speeder shed. Some of the sidings here were of mixed gauge ( 3 ft / 914 mm narrow gauge and 4 ft 8 + 1 ⁄ 2 in / 1,435 mm standard gauge ).
The Laggan Dam was constructed in 1934 to provide hydro-electric power for refining aluminium. British Aluminium was an aluminium production company. It was originally formed as the British Aluminium Company Ltd on 7 May 1894 and was subsequently known as British Alcan Aluminium plc (1982-1996).
The ascent of Am Bodach starts at sea level at Kinlochleven; various routes, including the path initially followed by the West Highland Way from the western end of the village, can be followed to reach the old military road to Fort William built by General Caulfield, [5] which the West Highland Way then follows; all routes from the south involve initially reaching this track.
