The quena (hispanicized spelling of Quechua qina, [1] sometimes also written kena in English) is the traditional flute of the Andes. Traditionally made of cane or wood, it has 6 finger holes and one thumb hole, and is open on both ends or the bottom is half-closed (choked).
The flute has a two and a half octave range, achieved by overblowing to different overtones. It is traditionally tuned to an approximately equidistant heptatonic scale. Players often employ a technique of singing alternately or simultaneously to blown notes. The flute was used in the 2018 Marvel movie Black Panther. [1]
