The main campground offers several waterfront campsites. The other campground is west of the lake and is designed for larger recreational vehicles. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources has announced plans to drain the lake in the fall of 2008 in order to repair the dam and to eradicate gizzard shad which are detrimental to the fishery. The 0.7-mile (1.1 km) West Beach Succession Trail opened in 2007 and features different stages of plant succession in the beach and inland dunes. The Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk was completed in 2009 as a project of the National Park Service, Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority, and the City of Portage.
In 1971, the 30-acre (120,000 m 2) man-made Lake Coleman was added to the park and stocked with fish, and is maintained by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. The park's amenities include public camping, fishing, a public beach, petting zoo, walking paths, playgrounds, boating, an 18-hole disc golf course and ball courts.
The park is on the banks of the Ohio River, 1 mile (2 km) east of Charlestown. It was once part of the Indiana Army Ammunition Plant (INAAP), and was donated in separate parcels to the Indiana state government. In 1993, the state of Indiana was given 859 acres (3.48 km 2), and in 1994 was given an additional 1,125 acres (4.55 km 2) .

Summit Lake became Indiana's 19th state park in 1988. The park covers 2,680 acres (11 km 2 ), including an 800-acre (3.2 km 2 ) lake. The park is a mix of woodlands, old fields, wetlands, and prairie restoration areas which provide a wide range of flora and fauna.
