The locomotives were originally deep red , in the mid-1970s a new ivory / ocean blue (RAL 5020 - RAL 1014) colour scheme was introduced, in the second half of the 1980s an eastern red color scheme was used and since the late 1990s, the locomotives are found in the current traffic red of Deutsche Bahn AG.
With the introduction of type 474, the colour scheme of ivory and teal was replaced by a colour called "Traffic Red" (RAL 3020). External advertising covering the entire bodies of trains was abandoned at this time. The implementation of a consistent corporate design led to type 472 trains being updated with the new colour scheme.
