The airline division, Evergreen International Airlines, operated worldwide, in 168 countries, and by the end had been reduced to a fleet of all-cargo Boeing 747 freighters. The company also operated a helicopter division, Evergreen Helicopters which was sold to Erickson Air-Crane , an Oregon-based helicopter operator, for $250 million in 2013.
Evergreen Helicopters was the first of seven interrelated companies Smith founded and ran from his headquarters in McMinnville. [5] Smith entered the airline business in 1975 when he purchased Johnson Flying Services of Missoula, Montana. That same year, he bought a large aircraft maintenance depot in Marana, Arizona.
A licence is issued by Transport Canada in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) licence Standards And Recommended Practices (SARPs). A licence can be used to fly domestically as well as internationally, while a permit does not comply with ICAO standards and therefore can only be used within Canada, unless accepted by another country. [4]
The airline was originally to be called Evergreen Airways, [11] however this was deemed too similar to the unrelated Evergreen International cargo airline. [12] In October 1989, the newly formed EVA Airways Corporation placed a US$3.6 billion order for 26 aircraft from Boeing and McDonnell Douglas, including Boeing 747-400 and MD-11 airliners. [11]
