Most commuter rail lines in Chicago, including the Metra, used cars of this design.
These were originally C&NW class D 4-4-2 Atlantics, already more than 30 years old. In 1938, more passenger cars were added to the trains, so the locomotives were replaced by class E-S 4-6-2 Pacifics, with streamlined shrouds. These were still about 25 years old, but were better able to handle the heavier load.
The pace reverted to a 6½-hour schedule in 1955 and in 1960 to the 7-hour pace established in 1935. C&NW ceased running the Twin Cities 400 in 1963 and all intercity passenger service on C&NW ended with the formation of Amtrak in 1971. Today, the Twin Cities to Chicago route is served by the Amtrak Borealis, which takes about seven hours.
The name was eventually dropped, and the unnamed #1 and #2 trains were the final trains to stop at DeKalb on April 30, 1971. In 1950 the train received a new name, Flambeau 400 , in reference to the C&NW's popular Twin Cities 400 , named for making the approximately 400 mile run from Chicago to Minneapolis, Minnesota in 400 minutes, and Flambeau , the French word for a torch .
Metra does not refer to its lines by particular colors, but the timetable accents for the Union Pacific North line are dark "Flambeau Green," a nod to the C&NW's Flambeau 400 passenger train. [ 4 ] Until 2022, a private club car ran weekdays exclusively on the Union Pacific North Line.
