Gaurav Gogoi was born in 1982. His father Tarun Gogoi served as Chief Minister of Assam from 2001 to 2016 as the longest-serving chief minister of the state. He graduated from St. Columba's School in Delhi.
Tarun Gogoi was born on 1 April 1936 [2] into an ethnic Assamese Tai-Ahom family at Rangajan Tea Estate, [5] [6] erstwhile Sibsagar District, now the Jorhat District of Assam. [7] [8] His father, Kamaleshwar Gogoi [8] was a medical practitioner at Rangajan Tea Estate.
He received 33799 votes, 63.75% of the total vote. He defeated his nearest opponent by 22745 votes. In the 1996 Assam Legislative Assembly election he was reelected by a margin of 26969 votes. In 2001 he was reelected again by a margin of 17654 votes. He was made minister for Excise, Labour and Employment in the first Tarun Gogoi cabinet.
In the 2001 Assam Legislative Assembly election, Tudu was again the congress candidate. He received 61504 votes, 54.92% of the total vote and again became MLA for Gossaigaon. He was made a minister in the Tarun Gogoi cabinet. He did not seek reelection in 2006 and his son became the Congress candidate but lost. [5]
