VFA-14 and VFA-41, who had been part of CVW-8, had transitioned to the F/A-18 Super Hornet and were attached to CVW-11, and VFA-22 was sent to CVW-9. CVW-11 made its first deployment with Nimitz in March 2003 supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom, as only the second air wing to deploy Super Hornets.
CVW-9 squadrons embarked on board the Carl Vinson for the deployment included VMFA-323, VFA-154, VFA-147, VFA-146, VAQ-138, VAW-112, VS-33, HS-8 and Detachment 4 of Fleet VRC-40. [4] [5] During the deployment, the air wing logged 2,600 flight hours by its four F-18 strike-fighter squadrons.
One highlight of the 2011 WESTPAC deployment occurred on 18 April 2011 when Captain Kevin "Nix" Mannix made his 1,000th arrested landing when he landed his F/A-18F Super Hornet from Strike Fighter Squadron 154 on the flight deck of Ronald Reagan. Captain Mannix was the deputy commander of Carrier Air Wing 14. [10]
