Madame Butterfly is first - an opera. It's played by any woman who can hit the notes - regardless of race. I saw a MET Opera where Angel Blue, an Africa-American opera singer, played a 19th century French woman?

I am white, live in Georgia and yes, racism still exists in the south just as it does almost everywhere. It is a sad mindset that most probably will always exist in one form or another. I have found that the more ignorant the person, the stronger the bigotry and racism.

It's satire of racism. The film itself is poking fun at racists and racism. Using racist terms and tropes to show just how dumb racism is. Truly a brilliant and hilarious film. I read an article a few months back where the author was accusing the people who say that film couldn't be made today of looking at the film as a tacit approval of racism..

There are plenty of people from India here, and I don't think racism against them is a problem. There is definitely race discrimination here, but not against people with your background. If you are Muslim, or if people think you are Muslim based on how you dress, that is a different issue.

Generally speaking areas with the least amount of racial diversity particularly with whites and blacks tend to have the least amount of racial tension/racism from my experiences. The most racist areas I’ve been to IMO were southern California , Michigan , Virginia , and Florida and the least racist IMO have been Oregon , Washington , Colorado ...

Its constant in St.Louis for any race that isn't African American. its getting just as bad in Columbia, St.Charles, and Kansas City too. African American are alloweed by the media and society to get away with being extreme racists it needs to be stopped. Being a African-American, moving to St. Louis, this saddens me.

The overwhelming majority of the time it is subtle, and only noticed by those who have had personal experiences dealing with racism and are nuanced enough to pick up on these things. I once had the misfortune of eating out in Western MD (near Hagerstown) once, and the wait staff was very rude and ignorant, and treated me as if I were an alien ...

This thread is for the "worst racism in films", but I have one I want to mention that isn't the "worst" racism, but is a scene that always bugs me. In Casablanca (1942) Ilsa Lund asks for "the boy at the piano" to come over to her table. But Sam the piano player is a grown black man, not a boy.

This was less a factor of racism than the same word used in "To Kill a Mockingbird" or "Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn," both of which were fictional. It was common for any black pet to be called that in my childhood in the late 1970's and early 1980's in Australia, - it was considred as harmfull as calling a white dog "snowy".
