The 104th Division was constituted in the Organized Reserve on 24 June 1921, allotted to the Ninth Corps Area, and assigned to the XIX Corps.The division was allocated to the states of Utah, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming as its home area, although the 2nd Battalion, 413th Infantry was organized at Reno, Nevada. Between 10 January and 29 February 1968, the regiment was reorganized to consist of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Battalions, all part of the 104th Division (Training). On 16 April 1995, the division became the 104th Division (Institutional Training). The regiment was reorganized to consist of the 1st Battalion in the 104th Division on 16 September.
The 1st through 25th Infantry Divisions, excepting the 10th Mountain Division, were raised in the Regular Army or the Army of the United States prior to American involvement in World War II. Because of funding cuts, in September 1921, the 4th through 9th Infantry Divisions were mostly inactivated.

Inactivated during post-World War II demobilization, the regiment was reactivated 25 March 1947 as part of the Organized Reserves and headquartered in Oakland, California. Since 1947, the regiment has undergone reorganization and its headquarters have moved, with the current headquarters being at Vancouver Barracks , Washington.

On 31 December 1944, the 784th began official combat operations with the 104th Infantry Division. They participated in actions along the Roer River. On 3 February 1945, the 784th was released from duty with the 104th Division to the 35th Infantry Division. On 8 February 1945, the 784th joined the 35th Division in a major offensive.
