The Bayfield Fish Hatchery is a historic fish hatchery in Salmo, Wisconsin, located 2.3 miles (3.7 km) southwest of Bayfield. The hatchery was built in 1897 in the Queen Anne style and Shingle style using local brownstone and played a historically significant role in the fishing industry on Lake Superior . [ 2 ]
In the 1870s a nationwide movement for fish hatcheries emerged, aimed at supplying freshwater fish for consumers and sportsmen. Wisconsin started its own program in 1874. [3] In 1906 the Delafield Fish Hatchery was established - the second hatchery in this state system. [4] Two bass-rearing ponds were built that first year.
The C.D. "Buzz" Besadny Anadromous Fish Facility is a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources egg collection station near the city of Kewaunee. Trout and salmon migrating from Lake Michigan through the Kewaunee River are led by flowing water in a fish ladder to collection ponds.
