"United We Stand" is a song written by Tony Hiller and Peter Simons (writer's pseudonym for group member Johnny Goodison). It was first released in 1970 by the Brotherhood of Man in their original, pre- Eurovision line-up, consisting of Goodison, Tony Burrows , Roger Greenaway , Sue Glover and Sunny Leslie . [ 3 ]
The phrase is referenced in the lyrics: "United we stand, yet divided we fall. Together, we can stand tall," from the Public Enemy song 'Brother's Gonna Work It Out,' from the album Fear of a Black Planet (1990). Marillion varied the phrase to "Divided we stand, together we'll rise" in the song White Feather on the album Misplaced Childhood ...
The song is notable as one of the earliest patriotic songs in the Thirteen Colonies.Dickinson's seventh verse offers the earliest known publication of the phrase that parallels the motto "united we stand, divided we fall", a patriotic slogan that has prominently appeared several times throughout U.S. history.
