After the shooting of his son, the Irish American oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny donated $1.1 million in 1932 to USC to build the Doheny Library. While the exterior of the library was designed by architect Ralph Adams Cram, the interiors and the final working drawings for the building were designed by Pasadena-based architect, Samuel Lunden. At the time, this was the largest donation to a school of music in the United States. In 2006, she donated an additional $5 million to support the facility needs of the school. The building was renovated to become the new home of the School of Music's Jazz Department and opened in the fall of 2023. The library, completed in the mid-1990s, reflected a shift to designs closer to earlier Romanesque Revival architecture. It was named in honor of Thomas E.
