Family patriarch Simon Lazarus (1808–1877) opened a one-room men's clothing store in downtown Columbus in 1851. By 1870, with improvements to the industry in the mass manufacture of men's uniforms for the Civil War, the family business expanded to include ready-made men's civilian clothing, and eventually, a complete line of merchandise.
The Arrow Collar Man was the name given to the various male models who appeared in advertisements for shirts and detachable shirt collars manufactured by Cluett Peabody & Company of Troy, New York. The original campaign ran from 1905–31, though the company continued to refer to men in its ads and its consumers as "Arrow men" much later.
F&R Lazarus & Company was founded nearby in 1851, possibly between Rich and Mound Streets. By 1858 it moved to the Parsons Building, at the southwest corner of Town and High streets. [ 2 ] In 1909, the company moved to the current Lazarus Building, and moved from being predominantly a men's clothing store to a general department store.
