The World Snooker Championship trophy. The World Snooker Championship is an annual snooker tournament founded in 1927, and played at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, England since 1977. The tournament is now played over seventeen days in late April and early May, and is chronologically the third of the three Triple Crown events of the season.
Most recently, the 2023 champion Luca Brecel lost in the first round of the 2024 World Snooker Championship. Kyren Wilson, winner of the 2024 event, is yet to attempt to break the Crucible curse. Several world champions successfully defended their first title in the pre-Crucible era; the last to do so was John Pulman in 1964. [6]

The tournament was the last of nine ranking events in the 2011–12 snooker season on the World Snooker Tour. [13] It featured a 32-player main draw that was held at the Crucible Theatre, as well as a qualifying draw that was played at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield from 5 to 15 April. [14]
Stephen Hendry was the eventual winner, after defeating Jimmy White 18–14 in the final. At one point White led by 14–8, but Hendry then won 10 successive frames to secure his second World Championship title. [1] The tournament was sponsored by cigarette manufacturer Embassy.
