The Direct Rendering Manager and KMS are part of the Linux kernel. The KMS does only the mode setting. Mode setting is a software operation that activates a display mode (screen resolution, color depth, and refresh rate) for a computer's display controller by using VESA BIOS Extensions or UEFI Graphics extensions (on more modern computers).
Windows Subsystem for Linux GUI (WSLg) is built with the purpose of enabling support for running Linux GUI applications (X11 and Wayland) on Windows in a fully integrated desktop experience. [33] WSLg was officially released at the Microsoft Build 2021 conference and is included in Windows 10 Insider build 21364 or later. [ 19 ]
Later versions of Linux allow to specify the resolution using modes from 1000h to 7FFFh. The code has a "0xHHWW" form where HH is a number of rows and WW is a number of columns. E.g. 0x1950 corresponds to a 80×25 mode, 0x2b84 to 132×43, etc. [ 29 ] (Linux 3.x and later allow to set resolution using "video=<conn>:<xres>x<yres>", but solely for ...

The total available GDI objects varies from one version of Windows to the next: Windows 9x had a limit of 1,200 total objects; Windows 2000 has a limit of 16,384 objects; and Windows XP and later have a configurable limit (via the registry) that defaults to 10,000 objects per process (but a theoretical maximum of 65,536 for the entire session).
The Direct Rendering Manager (DRM) is a subsystem of the Linux kernel responsible for interfacing with GPUs of modern video cards.DRM exposes an API that user-space programs can use to send commands and data to the GPU and perform operations such as configuring the mode setting of the display.
Unix/Linux systems may offer other tools support using progress indicators from scripts or as standalone-commands, such as the program "pv". [52] These are not integrated features of the shells, however. PowerShell has a built-in command and API functions (to be used when authoring commands) for writing/updating a progress bar.
The second is the full-screen mode. In Windows XP and earlier, the full-screen console uses a hardware text mode and uploads a raster font to the video adapter. This is analogous to a text system console. This early full-screen mode only supports VGA-compatible text modes, giving it a maximum character resolution of 80 columns by 28 rows. [2]
