The Vega name was subsequently licensed to a number of American and international companies. In 1989, the Deering Banjo Company purchased the Vega name. They currently produce Vega banjos reminiscent of the instruments Vega made during the 1960s folk revival. Vega trumpets and cornets were on par with the highest quality brass horns of their time.
Peabody also developed a special electric banjo—first with Vega, and later with the Fender Company and Rickenbacker—called the Banjoline. It was tuned as a plectrum banjo but with the 3rd and 4th strings doubled in octaves, as on a 12-string guitar. [3] Although seldom performed on today, it is a highly prized collector's item.
The museum has instruments related to different stages of Earl Scruggs career. Scruggs' first five-string banjo was a Gibson RB-11; the museum obtained an identical instrument that was made in 1938. [22] [23] Scruggs' main banjo was a Gibson Granada, which he played even after Vega created a special banjo for him. [23]
English: A Vega ‘’Vegaphone Deluxe’’ banjo (1931) is exhibited in a case of Jazz Age banjos at the American Banjo Museum. The instrument was the top of the Vegaphone line and had gold-plated and engraved metal parts, hand carving, and a cellulose covered resinator (predating the current era where plastic is cheap—it was new and exotic then).
Eddie Peabody was the greatest proponent of the plectrum banjo in the early to mid twentieth century. Prominent contemporary plectrum players include Cynthia Sayer . Earl Scruggs was the greatest three-finger picker of the mid to late twentieth century, and continued to play into the early 21st century.
Danny Barnes (born December 21, 1961) [1] is an American banjo player, singer, and composer whose music is influenced by country, jazz, blues, punk, metal, and more. [2] He has been described as a "banjo virtuoso" [3] [4] and is "widely acknowledged as one of the best banjo players in America."
Alfred Adolphus Farland Sr. (April 10, 1864 – May 5, 1954) was a Canadian-American banjoist, playing in the classic banjo style for more than 40 years. [1] [4] [5] He played the banjo wearing a tuxedo, bringing an air of sophistication to the instrument, when the 19th-century image for a banjo player tended toward the comic, the racist and the crude. [6]
[2] [3] He bought his first real banjo in 1927, and soon fell under the influence of Smith Hammett and Rex Brooks, two early banjo players who did much for the development of Jenkins' style. In 1934, he appeared on the radio show Crazy Water Barn Dance over WBT in Charlotte, North Carolina with his newly formed group, the Jenkins String Band. [ 3 ]
