Winthrop is a town in Okanogan County, Washington, United States. It is east of Mazama and north of Twisp. The population was 394 at the 2010 census, and increased to 504 at the 2020 census. Winthrop adopted an Old West theme for its downtown architecture in 1971 to prepare for the opening of the North Cascades Highway.
It was built in 1904 for Bronson Winthrop and was known as Muttontown Meadows. [1] It was the first commission of Delano and Aldrich in the area. Its exterior walls were modeled after Mount Vernon , and was on an estate of 183 acres.
Soon the Winthrop Primary school and Winthrop village shopping centre were opened. Blocks were so sought after that many people resorted to sleeping near the sales office for up to a week just to secure a position. The name is derived from that of the first Chancellor of the University of Western Australia, Sir John Winthrop Hackett. [2]
