The Karakoram Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as the Nubra Shyok or the (Saichen Shyok is a high altitude wildlife sanctuary located in the easternmost reaches of the Karakoram range in Leh district, in the Indian union territory of Ladakh. [1] It was established in 1987 and covers an area of about 5,000 square kilometres (500,000 ha). [2]
The region of Nubra is drained by the Shyok and Nubra rivers. Alexander Cunningham listed Nubra as one of the five natural and historical divisions of Ladakh. [5] Nubra occupies the northeastern portion of Ladakh, bordering Baltistan and Chinese Turkestan in the north, and the Aksai Chin plateau and Tibet in the east.
Siachen glacier is a source to the Nubra River which later joins the Shyok River. The glacier's melting waters are the main source of the Nubra River in the Indian region of Ladakh, which drains into the Shyok River. The Shyok in turn joins the 3000 kilometre-long Indus River which flows through Pakistan.

Turtuk is situated in the Nubra tehsil of the Leh district, [2] [3] on the banks of the Shyok River. [4] Geographically, the village is in the Baltistan region, which has been under Pakistani administration, except for five villages of the Turtuk block which are part of India.
