A distribution system insulated from earth ground may attain a high potential due to transient voltages caused by static electricity or accidental contact with higher potential circuits. An earth ground connection of the system dissipates such potentials and limits the rise in voltage of the grounded system.
The three-phase system is 110 V phase-to-phase and 63 V to neutral / earth. This system voltage is slightly above the ELV limit, but is still very commonly used for cord-powered hand tools and temporary lighting in hazardous areas. A wire break in the fault to load section, or in the earth to ground section, will disable operation of the devices. Requirement of an additional third wire from the load to the devices. Separate devices cannot be grounded individually. Any additional connection to Earth on the protected system can disable the detector.
