  2. 50-70 Government - Cast Boolits

    castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?28334-50-70-Government

The .50-70 is one of the most inherently accurate calibers I've ever fooled with - not just my rifles, but every .50-70 with a fine bore that I've had the pleasure of shooting. IMO, it is an ignored (and superior) little brother to the .50-90 and .50-140 heavy ordnance.

    630. .50-70 Governtment in a Sharps carbine. I have an opportunity to pick up a 1863 Sharps carbine in .50-70 Government or .50 1 3/4 as it's listed on the barrel. The gun is a newer rifle made by Shiloh Sharps. I don't have much experience with the round, I do know from looking I can get dies, ammo and brass fairly easy from Buffalo Arms and a ...

They are 1.032 inches long, vary in width along the seam axis versus 90° from the axis but are nominally 0.515 inch. Couldn't find a sizer. They weigh (average of 10) 469.5 grains (lube removed). Are lubed with something red that doesn't feel like it's going to work for black powder.

  6. 50-70 Black Powder Reloading - Cast Boolits

    castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?444740-50-70-Black-Powder-Reloading

50-70 Black Powder Reloading. I decided to make an account to talk to you guys after I had recently acquired a 1868 Springfield Trapdoor rifle produced in 1869 chambered in 50-70 Government. I had started to get into reloading back in early 2020 when ammunition was scarce. Starting out with 30-06 and moving along to each caliber of firearm I ...

Weather was nice enough on Wednesday to take my 1870 50-70 trapdoor to the range. This rifle shoots awesome with a load consisting of a 515142 over a .060" wad on top of 57gr of 1 1/2FG. The wind was blowing directly towards the firing and line and when I touched one off I had a face full of smoke!

I've got a 50-70 trapdoor. I use the Lee 450 grain boolit with 5744, Accurate has load data compatible with trapdoors. I suspect it would work in a rolling block. I think they also had data with their 2495 powder at even lower pressure. Not sure if the 2495 is still available.

The length and style suggest the 50-70 government which is a center fire but the original GI used an in the case primer and the shell looks like a rim fire. There were two types one had crimp marks just above the case rim and the other did not have any. Based on it being found near an old army fort this is what it could be.

Scroll down half way on the page of this link from my web albums. It show several pictures of 50-70 cases, bullets, and compressed powder that the U.S. Government used, and some were just experimental. Notice the concave or notched bottom on most of the bullets used from the .50 pistol to the .45-70. Both 50-70 & .45-70 bullets were rolled, not ...
