In term of viability, it depends. Before the hotfix nerf, early 1.4.4 was the strongest Terra Blade had ever been. After the nerf, the moderate DPS decrease is enough to make the 1.4.3 Terra Blade arguably the stronger version thanks to the Whip Melee Speed buff exploit.
Terra blade is a early post plantera weapon easy to craft and super strong for it's stage. Great dps, piercing, big projectile and super fast and scale with melee speed. Flying dragon has bigger dps ok but needs a lot of grind, post golem, and harder to aim. Terra blade didn't meant to be the second best sword in Terraria idk how have you see that.

Honestly, I don't really care that the Terra Blade isn't endgame, I care that it isn't the best sword, the Terra Blade is a symbol of Terraria considering they both have "Terra" in them, and prior to the Influx Waver/Star Wrath/Meowmere, the biggest goal for a melee character was to get the Terra Blade, I remember the times I had trying to get the Terra Blade, and when I did I was like: "YES!!
Sup guys. I exit and save my game with a Terra Blade in the Goblin reforging slot, and the weapons just vanished...
Old Terra Blade had higher base damage, yes, but current Terra Blade is a significantly more effective weapon and can reach much higher DPS with pretty little investment. The Excalibur/True Excalibur reworks were net positives for the weapons because a) they differentiated them from the other "beam sword" weapons, giving them a different use ...
