Tarbosaurus bataar was a large carnivorous theropod dinosaur from Central Asia and nearly as large as T. rex. While T. rex can be called the king of North American dinosaurs during the Late Cretaceous, Tarbosaurus was its counterpart in Asia.
The discovery of Tarbosaurus, scientifically known as Tarbosaurus bataar, marked a significant milestone in paleontology. Unearthed in 1946 during a Soviet-Mongolian expedition to the Gobi Desert, the fossilized findings included a partial skull of a large theropod and cervical vertebrae.
Tarbosaurus bataar Characteristic. Tarbosaurus was a large carnivorous theropod dinosaur found in Mongolia. Like its close North American relative Tyrannosaurus rex, it had a very large head and strong jaws, but it was not one of the heaviest theropods. Its huge skull was relatively thin and light, with large hollow holes.
