My understanding on the Marcus Freeman thing is that it's not so simple. He didn't have a timeout. He can't just call the non-existent timeout and take a penalty; if you don't have one they'll just generally ignore you. If you try to rush a guy on and he doesn't make it, and they score, they can just decline the penalty.
Freeman didn't want an offsides penalty that would come with having a player running into the field but not making it all the way to the end zone because that gives OSU an extra chance. But calling a timeout you don't have is a dead ball penalty, we'd get half the distance but we'd still only have one chance to get the ball in the end zone.
He’s a first time HC at a place where even established coaches can struggle early on. Year 1 was the high water mark for Weis and Willingham. Freeman isn't really comparable anyway as he was taking over a program in better shape than any ND new coach in like half a century. 23.
Marcus Freeman currently has a higher winning percentage against Top 10 teams (2-4). Kind of crazy that Freeman has already coached against six Top 10 opponents -- BK didn't get to six until his 5th year at ND.
topher3003. •. “I wrote it down — here’s exactly what I said: ‘There study habits are formulated every day. You can’t cheat academics at Notre Dame. If I didn’t go to class at Ohio State, 60,000 students. Cincinnati, another big public school, there’s 40,000 students. If you don’t go to class, okay, take some online classes ...
Brian Kelly only played 11 top 10 teams in his entire career as Notre Dame's head coach. Freeman will already have 1 with the Oklahoma St Fiesta Bowl and could end up with over 10 in his first few years if OSU, Clemson and A&M stay true to their recruiting rankings and USC has the quick turnaround in a now weak PAC 12 that some expect.
Eh, I don't think Beamer is ugly. There is a chasm a hundred miles wide between “meh he’s not ugly” and “he’s the hottest coach in college football.”. He’s a fine looking gentleman, but I’m not sure he’d make my (totally hypothetical definitely haven’t spend hours making it) top 100 list. Freeman's got to be up there imo.
I personally never believed any of those narratives, but regardless am very impressed by Freeman, especially his deft unloading of our erstwhile OC as head coach for a new program. 10/10 move. Hope the new guy from LSU pans out.
Marcus Freeman is making rookie head coaching mistakes and will be lucky to still be a HC in 5 years. Recruiting only works if you can develop the talent, otherwise Michigan would win more often against OSU.
He left behind for Freeman the #18 and #16 overall classes, and those were completely gutted at QB, WR and LB for the little talent that was in those classes to boot. Which just happens to be all the positions in which we are awful. People wanting to fire Freeman now are out of their goddamn mind.
