The Cooper Basin has the most important on-shore petroleum and natural gas deposits in Australia. The oil and gas window is located 1,250 m below the surface [1] and was originally discovered in the 1960s (although there are larger oil and gas deposits off-shore). The first commercial discovery of gas occurred in 1963. [1]
Gas production is mostly concentrated in the Cooper Basin in the state's north-east. Gas is delivered from these fields by pipeline to users interstate and to Port Adelaide where it fuels three separate gas-fired power plants. Uranium is also mined in South Australia, though nuclear power generation is prohibited nationally.
In Queensland and South Australia the Eromanga Basin has been explored and developed for petroleum production. [3] Commercial quantities of gas were first discovered in 1976 and oil in 1978. [1] The basin contains Australia's largest onshore oilfield, the Jackson oil field. [4] Moomba is the centre of South Australia's oil production in the basin.

The Moomba Adelaide Pipeline System is a natural gas pipeline delivering gas from the Cooper Basin gas wells near Moomba to Adelaide, with spur pipelines to Angaston and Whyalla. It can also receive gas from Southeastern Queensland through the QSN Link pipeline owned by APA Group. [1]
After eventually making some discoveries in the Cooper Basin, Beach now holds interests in five producing basins across Australia and New Zealand, including the Cooper Basin, Bass Basin, Otway Basin, Perth Basin and Taranaki Basin. In 2014, Beach Energy was the largest onshore oil producer in Australia. [6]
According to the EPA’s Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program, methane emissions dropped in seven oil- and natural gas-producing basins by up to 87% from 2019-2023. ... The Permian Basin accounts for ...
Santos was incorporated on 18 March 1954, with its name an acronym of South Australia Northern Territory Oil Search. Its core business was initially built on gas discoveries in the Cooper Basin, South Australia, with the discovery and development of the Gidgealpa 2 well in 1963 and Moomba 1 in 1966.
