The National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI) is a research institute in Nigeria that was established in 1924 and has the mandate to conduct research into how to ably identify, treat and control animal diseases as well as the development of vaccines for such training and the provision of support services to livestock and poultry farmers.
To achieve the goal, the institute has been offering diploma/certificate courses and vocational educational programs in livestock, poultry, dairy, fisheries, wildlife, etc. The subject specialists of this institute are also providing extension services to farmers at their doorsteps.
The Poultry Research and Training Centre (PRTC) has been established on 11 March 2008 with the financial support from Agricultural Sector Programme Support (ASPS) II of Danida at the Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU) campus, within the legal framework of the university Act 2006 (Act 30 of 2006).
The newly formed Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University has been allocated an amount of Rs. 100 crore in the Union Budget for 2011–12. This is a one-time grant for the development of the potential in veterinary and animal sciences research in the new university.
Historically, the degree was called animal husbandry and the animals studied were livestock species, like cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry, and horses. Today, courses available look at a broader area, including companion animals, like dogs and cats, and many exotic species. Degrees in Animal Science are offered at a number of colleges and universities.

The University of Edinburgh purchased the Bush and Dryden estates in 1947, allocating the land around the farmstead at Easter Bush to the Veterinary College for livestock practical teaching. In 1962, the university opened a Veterinary Field Station and Centre for Tropical Veterinary Medicine on the land to the south of Home Farm at Easter Bush.
