A separate sunday school building was constructed on the church campus in 1921. In 1969, a lightning bolt struck the bell tower, igniting a fire which destroyed the room and ceiling over the church. Rebuilding commenced and was completed within a year to celebrate the two hundredth anniversary of the church's organization. [5]
In 1973, this congregation merged with another historic Lutheran congregation, St. Matthew Lutheran Church, which was located at 1901 Druid Hill Ave. St. Matthew's had been founded in 1929 by a group of African American Lutherans who moved from rural Meherrin, Virginia, to Baltimore in the first wave of the Great Migration.
