Madison Kyle Bumgarner (born August 1, 1989), nicknamed "MadBum", [1] is an American professional baseball pitcher who is a free agent. Previously, he pitched in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the San Francisco Giants (2009–19) [ 2 ] and Arizona Diamondbacks (2020–23).
Bumgarner also has hit the second most home runs by a pitcher since the American League adopted the designated hitter rule in 1973 (behind Carlos Zambrano). Bumgarner has played most of his career thus far for the San Francisco Giants of the National League, and is currently playing for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Giants' lead didn't last long, as Bumgarner gave up home runs to Matt Adams and Tony Cruz in the top of the fourth. Both starters settled down as Bumgarner retired the final 13 batters he faced, and Wainwright retired his final 10 straight. In 2020, the use of the designated hitter was temporarily expanded to both leagues, and no Silver Slugger Award for a pitcher was given. In 2022, the use of the designated hitter was permanently allowed in both leagues, and the Silver Slugger Award for pitchers was retired.
