The Cary family (also Carey) is an English aristocratic family with a branch in Ireland. The earliest known ancestor of the family is Sir Adam de Kari who was living in 1198. [ 2 ] Sir John Cary (died 1395) purchased the Manor of Clovelly in the 14th century [ 3 ] and established the family's status as members of the landed gentry .
Henry Carey, 1st Baron Hunsdon, KG, PC (4 March 1526 – 23 July 1596) was an English peer and courtier. He was the patron of the Lord Chamberlain's Men , William Shakespeare 's playing company. The son of Mary Boleyn , he was a cousin of Elizabeth I .
His father was the son of Sir John Cary (d. 9 September 1552) and wife Joyce Denny (d. from 10 November 1560 to 30 January 1561) and nephew of Sir William Carey. He entered Gray's Inn in 1590 and entered Exeter College, Oxford in 1593 at the age of sixteen. [2] According to Wood, by the aid of a good tutor Cary became highly accomplished.

The title was created in 1620 by King James VI for Sir Henry Cary, a member of the Cary family. He was born in Hertfordshire and had no previous connection to Scotland. He was made Lord Cary at the same time, also in the Peerage of Scotland. His son, the second Viscount, was a prominent statesman.
Carey was the son of John Carey, 3rd Baron Hunsdon. Cambridge University awarded him an honorary MA in 1607. [1] He was knighted, as a Knight of the Bath (KB), on 3 June 1610. He was elected MP for Sussex in 1609 and Hertfordshire in 1614. [2] Carey succeeded as 4th Baron Hunsdon on 17 April 1617.

Robert Carey married Elizabeth Trevannion, the daughter of Sir Hugh Trevannion and Sybilla Morgan, on 20 Aug 1593.
