Camp Blanding was established in 1939 on 30,000 acres (12,000 ha) as a training facility for the Florida National Guard after its previous training base, Camp Foster, on the St. Johns River near Jacksonville had been taken over by the Navy for Naval Air Station Jacksonville.

The United States Air Force's 202d RED HORSE squadron (202 RHS) is a civil engineering unit of the Florida Air National Guard located at Camp Blanding, Florida.The acronym RED HORSE is derived from "Rapid Engineer Deployable Heavy Operational Repair Squadron Engineers" and are a key element of the capabilities of the broader USAF civil engineering community.
More than 700 buildings sprung to life on the base before V-J Day (Victory over Japan), including an 80-acre (320,000 m 2) hospital and a POW camp which housed more than 1,500 German prisoners of war. Archbishop (later Cardinal) Francis J. Spellman dedicated the Catholic Chapel (St. Edward's) at its Birmingham Avenue location on January 17, 1943.
