Pejavara Matha is one of the Ashta Mathas of Udupi, which was started by Sri Adhokshaja Tirtha, [1] who was a direct disciple of Sri Madhvacharya, the founder of the Dvaita school of Hindu philosophy. Till date, 32 sanyasi pontiffs have headed this matha. The current presiding pontiff is Sri Vishwaprasanna Tirtha Swamiji.
It also houses a branch of the Krishnapura matha known as Mudai or Moodai Matha, another of the Ashta Mathas of Udupi founded by Dvaita philosopher Shri Madhvacharya. The region is known as Tulunadu/Tulunad. Pejavara is very close to the Thokur railway station on the Mumbai-Mangalore Konkan railway route. Also Jokatte railway station is nearby. [2]
Sri Vishvesha Tirtharu has ordained Sri Vishvaprasanna Tirtharu as his successor to the Pejavara matha in 1988. Sahasra Chandra Darshana Shanthi was celebrated for Sri Vishvesha Tirtha Swamiji in Tirumala kshetra on March 7, 2012 in the presence of several peethadipathis. His fourth tenure was in 2000 and his fifth tenure was in 2016.
The Ashta Mathas of Udupi (Kannada: ಉಡುಪಿಯ ತುಳು ಅಷ್ಟ ಮಠಗಳು) are a group of eight mathas or Hindu monasteries established by Madhvacharya, the preceptor of the Dvaita school of Hindu thought with his direct disciples to be the first Swami, head of the matha.
The Udupi Ashta Mathas are Palimaru matha, Adamaru matha, Krishnapura matha, Puttige matha, Shirur matha, Sodhe matha, Kaniyooru matha and Pejavara matha.
