According to the US Bureau of Justice Statistics' 2008 Census of State and Local Law Enforcement Agencies, the state had 233 law enforcement agencies employing 3,382 sworn police officers, about 186 for each 100,000 residents.
On January 1, 1986 a two-day riot began at the West Virginia State Penitentiary resulted in three inmate deaths. [3] The Eastern Regional Jail in Martinsburg, the first of the state's 10 regional jails opened in May 1989. The regional jails would gradually replace the 55 county jails. [4]

[3] The only state other than West Virginia to use magisterial districts as a minor civil division of its counties is Virginia, [1] which like West Virginia initially established a system of civil townships, in its Constitution of 1870. These were replaced by magisterial districts in 1874. [4]
The southern terminus of the route is at West Virginia Route 3 in Racine. The northern terminus is at West Virginia Route 61 in Marmet. WV 94 was once signed in West Huntington from Interstate 64 to the Nick Joe Rahall II Bridge beginning in 1970. In 1984, the route was decommissioned and replaced instead by US 52.
