The greatest tragedy in southern rock followed the Caldwell family. Toy's youngest brother Tim died in a car crash and 30 days later middle brother Tommy (bass player and leader of MTB) died a week after a car accident. Toy and his mother died 30 days apart in 1993. Toy Sr lived into the mid 2000's.

Paul Riddle, the drummer, used to be a good friend before I moved to Texas about 20 years ago. I feel bad for the Caldwell parents as all three of their sons died young (Tommy, Toy and Tim). Back in the 80's Tim and Tommy both died in car accidents one month apart as I recall. Toy died in the 90's from drugs. Very sad.

Tommy Johnston, who wrote and sang most of their early hits, roccked out rhythmically and soulfully with Les Paul Standards/Specials and SGs through old blackface Bandmasters and Deluxe Reverbs. They are great guitarists, but neither of them have chops close to Toy Caldwell's. Toy must have had the original bionic thumb!

And Toy played through notoriously clean/bright amps (Twins, usually). The biggest 'characteristic' I remember about playing mini-hum-equipped guitars isn't so much the body of a wang-chung'd chord, but the attack had a bit more bite and maybe even a touch of 'clack' to it. Caldwell's thumb technique lessen'd that quite a bit.

Toy Caldwell was on fire! The Dickey Betts-lead ABB started off well but seemed to fall back into endless jams that featured Dickey's noodling. To my ears, even though Chuck Leavell was a great addition to the band, there was no one to push Dickey or keep him from going off the rails.
