Register Today. Aug 26, 2015. #2. Find a Rigdit ratchet handle for their pipe dies. May not be exactly the same, but should give an idea of how its built. I've seen a arbor press where they used one of these handles instead of the original one that was lost. They were cheap to replace when you broke one, too.

Jan 10, 2018. #3. Search craigslist for old FAMCO or Dake arbor presses. Got my Famco 3 ton for around $100 if I remember right. About 1950's vintage. Much heavier/durable than the new imports. Came with the original platen (wheel with different size slots) and no hammer marks on the top of the ram. Also get one with a deep throat if possible.

An arbour press is basicly like a big c-clamp. It has the advantage in that you can see daylight on three sides of the press, so it can handle long objects etc. They can be powered by a variety of rams, the most common is a rack and pinion that has a handle directly attached to the pinion shaft.

The daisy wheel is 2” thick, but 1” should work fine. The larger arbor press is a Greenerd 5S. I used 1.5” steel plate for both the daisy wheel and snail plate. Both are 12” in diameter. The 1.5” is about right for this arbor press as the gearing is compounded which generates quite a bit more force.

    310. Mar 15, 2014. #1. Bought this Famco 3R Arbor Press from CL a few weeks ago. Decent Shape, needs some cleaning. $150 for a 4 ton ratcheting press seemed like a deal. I had picked up a cast iron base at the scrap yard last summer for $50, a match made in heaven. Made a 3/4" top (scrap yard find as well) to fit the press and got the base ...

That is a really tiny press. the base is 2.5 x 3 something inches. So Aluminum would be okay. Its not a very rigid design. the column clamps to the base with one bolt. I would make it out of CR steel. Stiffer and cheaper than Aluminum. That is billed as a modeling exercise, not something I would want to build.

9,422. Sep 17, 2018. #2. An arbor press provides better tactile feedback when pressing something. For example, when pressing a bearing into position, you can feel when the bearing bottoms out. A hydraulic press is capable of much higher force but provides less feel. Sometimes this matters, sometimes not.
