South Dakota State Parks and recreation areas range in size from the 19-acre Sandy Shore Recreation Area to the 71,000-acre Custer State Park. It was the first park established in the system, in 1919. Good Earth State Park at Blood Run is the most recent park, added in 2013. System-wide visitation in 2016 was 7,500,000.

Farm Island Recreation Area is a state recreation area in Hughes County, South Dakota in the United States. It is named for Farm Island located in the Missouri River, just downstream of Pierre, the state capitol. The island is now connected to the main shore via a causeway.
A concrete walking path to the area of the lake was built in 2008 to allow visitors to DeSmet to experience it. [4] As of 2023, an observation tower near Silver Lake is being constructed with the aid of the National Park Service and various local agencies to allow tourists to better observe the landscape described in Wilder's books. Ferney was laid out and platted in 1886 by W. H. Ferney, and named for him. [5] According to another tradition, the name is a transfer from Ferney, France. [6] A post office was established at Ferney in 1887, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1984.
