Sports Illustrated (SI) is an American sports magazine first published in August 1954. Founded by Stuart Scheftel , it was the first magazine with a circulation of over one million to win the National Magazine Award for General Excellence twice.
In 1997, sports sociologist Laurel R. Davis published The Swimsuit Issue and Sport: Hegemonic Masculinity in Sports Illustrated, examining the societal implications of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. Davis analyzed editions of the magazine from its inception in 1964 through the 1990s and conducted interviews with producers and readers.
