The league was formed in 2014 following the merger of the Midland Alliance and Midland Combination.. Successful Premier Division clubs can win promotion to the 8th level of the English football league system, while the competition also has a number of feeder leagues at level 11, which provide new member clubs each year.
Founded in 1889, only one year after the Football League, the Midland League was the second league for professional clubs to be formed. Eleven clubs participated in the first season, 1889–90, four of whom (including the first champions, Lincoln City) would go on to achieve Football League status. The club became founder members of the Alliance Premier League in 1979, and were the division's champions for the 1986–87 season, when it was renamed the Football Conference. [3] This ensured the club's entry to the Football League Fourth Division as the first non-league team to gain automatic promotion to The Football League .
Lincoln failed to gain re-election to the League three times between 1909 and 1920; on each occasion, they won the championship of the league to which they had been demoted, either the Midland League or, in 1912, the Central League, and made an immediate return to the Football League. [1] [3]
