The New York Central Railroad (reporting mark NYC) was a railroad primarily operating in the Great Lakes and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. The railroad primarily connected greater New York and Boston in the east with Chicago and St. Louis in the Midwest, along with the intermediate cities of Albany, Buffalo, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Detroit, Rochester and Syracuse.

The line the Central New York Railroad (CNYK) originally operated on, which was a 21.7-mile (34.9 km) branch line between Richfield Junction near Cassville and Richfield Springs, New York, was first opened in November 1872, when it began serving as a branch for the Utica, Chenango and Susquehanna Valley Railway.
