The term "the King's Highway" was first adopted in place of "provincial highway" in 1930, and signs similar to the current design replaced the previous triangular signs at that time. Highway 407 begins at the Highway 403/Queen Elizabeth Way junction in Burlington. Highway 407 is a 151.4-kilometre (94.1 mi) [1] controlled-access highway that encircles the GTA, passing through Burlington, Oakville, Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Markham, Pickering, Whitby, Oshawa, and Clarington, as well as travelling immediately north of Toronto.
The province of Ontario does not have a single unified network of controlled-access highways or freeways. Although most freeways are part of the 400-series highways , which can be characterized by their high design standard, several other sections of provincial highways are also classified as freeways.
All provincial highways in Alberta are 'Primary Highways'. On January 1, 1998, the province transferred sections of Highway 9 between Harriston and Orangeville to Dufferin County and Wellington County, creating a 67.7 km (42.1 mi) gap between sections of the highway. This transfer has been widely contested since it took place, often used as an example for the hastily executed highway transfers in Ontario.
