Gen 3, 4, and 5 G19s owner here. Gen 5 keeps some of the good gen 4 features (like factory texture, back straps, larger & reversible mag release) and added ambi slide stop, (slightly) improved the trigger, ditched the finger grooves, flared the magwell, 3 factory sight options, and added a barrel that's capable of a little improved accuracy over previous gens.
Here’s my take. There is nothing wrong with Gen 3, but I wouldn’t sell one just to get a Gen 5. New gun purchase, Gen 5 every time. California is the only reason the Gen 3 is still in production. It would be nice to see Glock up its game, get the Gen 5 approved for California and stop Gen 3 production.
The grip shape and particularly the Gen5 trigger, which I think is the best Glock has ever put in a street pistol, are endearing. With light .45s like this I usually go with a standard pressure load, and it's hard to beat the Winchester Ranger-T or the Federal HST, all in 230 grain.
GLOCK Gen5 Pistols Introducing the Gen5 family which includes 9x19, .40 S&W, 10MM AUTO, and .45 AUTO models. Gen5 pistols feature over 20 design modifications from their Gen4 predecessors, including the GLOCK Marksman Barrel, nDLC finish, ambidextrous slide stop lever, the removal of finger grooves and a flared mag-w
While my Gen 3 G17, G19 and Gen4 G22 aren't going anyplace, my Gen5 G22 is definitely an improvement over a Gen 3 gun in general, a Gen5 G23 is a significant improvement over a Gen 3 G23. In addition to the Gen5 improvements, the thicker and heavier slide in the Gen5 G23 make it a much more viable and comfortable to shoot .40.
That would be my last Gen 4, leaving me with all Gen 5 Glocks (well, the 19X isn't 'technically' Gen 5 I guess but it's close enough. And the G45 is full on Gen 5). My real 'want' in a Glock is a 23X (or whatever designation Glock gave a G23 slide on a G22 frame).
I just bought my first Glock this week. G20 10mm Gen 5 MOS. I had the shop put on Trijicon HD Night Sights at purchase, otherwise it’s fully stock. I picked up 500rds Magtech 180gr FMJ and 20rds Winchester Big Bore 200gr SJHP. Day 1: Cleaned gun, dry wiped and spot oiled with Lucas Extreme Duty Gun Oul. Shot 250rds Magtech with 7 nose up feed ...
The Gen 3 Glocks are a great choice and can often be found used for less than the Gen 5 Glocks. In your situation, it would depend a little on what models are involved. An example would be that if you have a Gen 5 19 and are looking for G26, Gen 5 would offer more parts compatibility.
Glock is shipping the Gen 5 polymer sights with the new heights. As an example the Glock gen 5 sights are 17/19, 22/23 ship with 4.1 mm front and 6.1 mm rear. One advantage of the new Gen 5 pattern rear sights is the base is narrower in the dove tail providing more windage adjustment. The other advantage is the rear sight notch is wider.
Gen 4 and gen 5 mags have identical bodies. The longer floor plate on gen 5 fits all guns except the G19X that has that front lip. They all are interchangeable (except for the G19X) Your G45 mags will absolutely work in a gen 4 Glock $499 is a very good price for a refurb Gen 4 G34. I wouldn’t even try to talk them down.
