The current Cozad High School mascot is named the Haymaker, in reference to one of the earliest pieces of local folklore, a character by the name of Johnny C. Haymaker. According to legend, Haymaker was an 18th-century farmer known for his remarkable efficiency in clearing fields with a powerful, sweeping punch, dubbed the "haymaker."
The Henri Museum art collection includes Henri's painting Mariana of Austria, Queen of Spain, which is a copy of the c. 1652 painting by Diego Velázquez. It was donated to the Museum by Janet LeClair in 1988. In 2018, the gallery displays more than 33 drawings, seven paintings, and other items belonging to the artist. [1]
Cozad was founded in 1873 by John J. Cozad, murderer, gambler, Ohio native, and father of painter Robert Henri. Cozad was often regarded as immoral among the citizens of the early town. [3] He purchased 40,000 acres of land from the Union Pacific Railroad and laid out the future town. He built houses on some of the land to entice people to settle.
