Circuit City Express was a chain of mall-based Circuit City stores with over 50 locations at its peak. The first locations opened in Baltimore, Maryland ; Richmond, Virginia ; and McLean, Virginia in 1989. [ 83 ]
After the 2009 closure of Circuit City, Electronic Express purchased three of the chain’s former locations, including two 20,000 sq ft “The City” format stores in Spring Hill, TN [8] and Cleveland, TN. [9] Electronic Express began carrying mattresses in 2011 in a single store before slowly adding mattresses to more stores.
Both stores were permanently closed in early 2021. A new stand alone location was later opened in the American Dream Mall in New Jersey. Fretter also attempted to bill its stores as superstores, with a marketing strategy similar to that of Circuit City and Best Buy. However, the smaller size of its Silo and Fretter's units (10,000 to 15,000 square feet, as opposed to 35,000 square feet or more for a typical Circuit City store), made this an untenable strategy.
