The MacDonald Brothers, now performing as The Macs, are a Scottish pop folk duo from Ayr, South Ayrshire, Scotland, consisting of brothers Brian and Craig MacDonald.They first rose to prominence in the third UK series of television talent show The X Factor in 2006, [1] and have since gone on to release four studio albums.

Roderick (Rory) MacDonald (Scottish Gaelic: Ruaraidh Dòmhnallach /ruərɪ dɔ̃ːnəlˠəx/; born 27 July 1949) is a Scottish songwriter and musician. He was bassist, and a primary song writer, for Celtic rock band Runrig, alongside his younger brother, Calum Macdonald. Generally, Rory wrote the melodies, and Calum the lyrics.

It has been claimed that the song was inspired by an actual band, the St Mary's Fife and Drum Band, formed in Limerick in 1885. In the late 19th century the band featured four brothers, Patrick, John, Michael and Thomas McNamara, and became famous for playing shows all across Ireland. Patrick was a prize-winning bandmaster of this band.
