The 2021–22 Liga 3 was first season of Portuguese football's third-tier league, following the reorganization which saw the Campeonato de Portugal moving one level down in the Portuguese football league system. First season, a total of 24 teams competed in this division.
The Campeonato de Portugal was introduced in 2013 as the new third-level championship, under the name Campeonato Nacional de Seniores (Seniors National Championship), replacing both the Segunda Divisão and Terceira Divisão (former third and fourth divisions, respectively). On 22 October 2015, it adopted its current naming.
In the 2021-22 season, the Portuguese Football Federation created the Liga 3 to replace the former iteration of the third tier of Portugal's football league system (D3) which was at the time the Campeonato de Portugal (from then on D4). Both competitions (D3 and D4) remained two events organised by the federation itself.

The winner of each district league is promoted to the fourth national tier, the Campeonato de Portugal. Moreover, all district leagues provide access to their correspondent district cup, and the winner of the district cup, along with the second-placed team in the district league, is allowed to participate in the next season's Portuguese Cup.
