This is a list of lakes of Minnesota. Although promoted as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes", Minnesota has 11,842 lakes of 10 acres (4.05 ha) or more. [1] The 1968 state survey found 15,291 lake basins, of which 3,257 were dry. [2] If all basins over 2.5 acres were counted, Minnesota would have 21,871 lakes. [3]

Regarded as a bass/panfish lake in the 1950s and 1960s, the lake is now managed primarily for rainbow trout and walleye. [2] The DNR turned Bad Medicine Lake into a trout lake in 1977, following an explosion of native crayfish that eliminated the vegetation used by bass and panfish . [ 1 ]
In the mid-1970s, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources started focusing on restoring Hay Creek. [6] By 1976, over half of the length of Hay Creek is a Minnesota designated trout stream. [7] Like the Vermillion River, Hay Creek receives extensive fishing pressure due to its proximity to Minneapolis–St. Paul.

The lake is within Crosby city limits. The Minnesota DNR has repeatedly stocked the lake with brook and rainbow trout. On August 19, 1957, the mine pit, then not yet filled with water, was launch site for a big stratospheric balloon, the second flight of the Air Force's Project Manhigh.
