May 4, 2012. #1. Tiger Trout. Here's an excerpt from my blog post from Wednesday's Tiger Trout trip. "We got to Roblin around 9pm and it was too late to fish. It had been raining hard the entire way and I was a little concerned that the road into Twin would be mucky. We over-nighted just outside of Roblin and got an early start Wednesday.
Photos by: Len Harris The tiger trout is a sterile hybrid cross between a female brown trout and a male brook trout. The fish exhibits unusual markings found in neither parent. Tiger trout are rare in the wild, appearing only in areas where brook and brown trout share spawning grounds.
Headed up the canyon for a quick trip after work this evening and landed my first ever Tiger Trout out of the stream. Just a little guy but he was fun to catch. The fish were in a feeding frenzy. I hooked him on a Copper John in about 4 feet of water right next to a small waterfall. Fun...
Here is what the High Savery web site says about Tiger Trout: High Savery Reservoir is the only Wyoming water hosting the tiger trout species. Tiger trout are completely sterile, so their numbers can be strictly controlled by stocking. The Tiger trout is a cross between a Brook and Brown Trout, resulting in a fairly aggressive fish.
In GSMNP there has been no stocking since 1975. However, many streams have three species of trout. This is pretty much dependent on elevation. No stocking in 49 years makes all of these wild trout as far as I am concerned but only one of these three is a native trout and that is the brook trout. I love them all but I love the brookies more.

I was itching to get into the beautiful little wild browns and brookies! For some reason, I had a feeling I would find a tiger, they were on my mind the whole drive up. This is a first for me!

I caught my 3rd tiger. It's been 3 years since I caught my 2nd tiger. I finally got out to our lake manged for large rainbow and tiger trout. This one is an 18"er. I christened my new sage foundation 590 on this fish. I bought this rod for use on my pontoon over a year ago. The rod fished great using streamers on its first trip out.
The USGS also confirms tiger trout are Salmo trutta x Salvelinus fontinalis. Native Range: Mainly an artificial hybrid, but has been known to occur in nature (Brown 1966; Allan 1977; International Game Fish Association 1994). (Even where it occurs "naturally," it is the result of stocking a nonindigenous species, the brown trout). Link provides ...
