Elmore Helf died on September 16, 1968, in Columbus, Ohio, at the age of 76. According to an obituary published in ‘Stained Glass Quarterly’ he was remembered as “one of the oldest active members of the Stained Glass Association of America, his firm the Franklin Art Glass Studios having been members for over forty years.” [7]

Douglas Phillips (1922–1995) was an American stained glass artist who founded the Phillips Stained Glass Studio in 1952. He is believed to be the only African American artist to run his own stained glass studio between the years of 1952 and 1995.
The original factory was in an old glass factory in Martins Ferry, Ohio, in 1905. [1] The factory at one time was owned by the former West Virginia Glass Company. [2] At first they painted glass blanks from other glass makers, but started making their own glass when they became unable to buy the materials they needed. [2]
In recent years, the Abbey has fallen victim to water leaks, which have damaged much of the plaster ceilings and marble floors. The Abbey has also become the target for many urban exploration groups and vandals. Many of the irreplaceable stained glass windows have been destroyed as people have attempted to find entry into or exit from the Abbey.
This area contains the stained-glass windows, pews, altar, and other artifacts from St. Peter's Church, a Catholic parish of the Diocese that was closed in the 1970s. Two of the original bells of the church are also held by the museum, with the third having been stolen before the church's demolition in May 1970. [28]
