This engine was superseded by the 409 cu in (6.7 L) as Chevrolet's top performing engine in 1961 and went out of production for cars at the end of that year. The gasoline engines that were offered in the medium-duty trucks were the Chevrolet 250 and 292 inline-sixes alongside the 350 small-block V8 and the 366, 427, and 454 big-block V8s. A very rare option was GMC's DH478 "ToroFlow" 478-cubic-inch diesel V6, which was offered only in 1973.
For 1990, Chevrolet debuted the 454 SS as a high-performance variant of the C1500. The newest American high-performance pickup truck since the 1989 Shelby Dakota , the 454 SS was a 1 ⁄ 2 -ton C1500 powered by a 230 hp (172 kW) 7.4 L V8.
It offers the airflow of more expensive heads, at a much lower cost. It does, however, require a specific intake manifold (the L31 has four bolts per head attaching the intake manifold, as opposed to the "traditional" six bolts per head found on older Chevrolet small-blocks). Chevrolet's L31 was replaced by GM's LS-based 5.3L LM7 and 6.0L LQ4.
