In L. Frank Baum's Land of Oz from 1900 to 1920, Dorothy and Ozma were described as being in an intimate friendship. [16] [17] In the series Once Upon a Time, Dorothy, who appears in seasons 3, 5, and 6 of the series, has a relationship with Ruby (Little Red Riding Hood), with the latter awakening her with a kiss in her final episode. Dorothy Gale is the main character and adolescent protagonist in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) and several sequel Oz books. She is a heroic and sweet-tempered orphan girl from a small farm on the prairies of Kansas. Baum never reveals Dorothy's age, but she is thought to be no older than twelve years old.
In 1902, at age 19, she played Dorothy Gale in a musical production of The Wizard of Oz that started in Chicago and ran on Broadway through 1904. [4] Other shows featuring Laughlin included His Majesty (1906), The Top o' th' World (1907), [5] Mama's Boy (1912), When Claudia Smiles (1914). She also had a solo variety show in 1909.
In Payes' The Wicked Witch of Oz (1993), Percy accompanied Dorothy Gale when the Wicked Witch of the South awakens from her long slumber. In the early 1990s, Payes was interviewed by The Baum Bugle in preparation for a rerelease of Hidden Valley and the first edition of the hitherto unpublished Wicked Witch .
The infant became gravely sick and died at the age of five months in Bloomington, Illinois, on November 11, 1898, from "congestion of the brain". Maud was devastated. [ 26 ] To assuage her distress, Baum made his protagonist of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz a girl named Dorothy, and he dedicated the book to his wife. [ 27 ]
While Dorothy Gale is at home in Kansas one day, she and her pet dog Toto meet the Shaggy Man who comes walking past the Gale farm. He is a friendly, yet slightly senile hobo with an optimistic, care free mentality. He politely asks Dorothy for directions to Butterfield, which is the nearest town on the prairie.

Published on June 5, 1917, it begins with the disappearance of Princess Ozma, the ruler of Oz and covers Dorothy and the Wizard's efforts to find her. The introduction to the novel states that its inspiration was a letter a young girl had written to Baum: "I suppose if Ozma ever got hurt or losted [ sic ], everybody would be sorry."
